Gold Country Fly Fishers is a fly-fishing club serving Grass Valley and Nevada City in California’s Sierra foothills. Founded in 1984 and affiliated with Fly Fishers International, the club brings anglers together through fishing outings, casting and fly-tying instruction, youth programs, and a shared commitment to healthy fisheries. The Lower Yuba River is central to the club’s conservation work. Members participate in river cleanups and advocate for its wild trout, salmon, and steelhead, including efforts to address fish passage and predation concerns at Daguerre Point Dam. The club welcomes anglers of all experience levels, helping them build skills and care for the waters they fish.

Frank Rinella

Conservation Co-chair

Frank Rinella is a Northern California fly angler, former guide, and longtime advocate for the Yuba River. He spent nearly 20 years guiding the North and Lower Yuba and has devoted more than two decades to conservation work with Gold Country Fly Fishers, where he serves as conservation co-chair. Frank brings firsthand knowledge of the river to discussions about fish habitat, water management, and the future of its trout, salmon, and steelhead.

Lower Yuba River Nature - Like Fish Passage Project

Hogan talks with longtime advocate and conservationist Frank Rinella about the proposed Nature-Like Fish Passage Project on the Lower Yuba River at Daguerre Point Dam. This project is highly controversial among Lower Yuba River anglers, guides, and community members, as it would open the stretch above Daguerre Point Dam to all fish migration—stripers, shad, green sturgeon, and, yes, more salmon and steelhead.
